Therapy for depression

Abstract Frozen Surface

Depression often feels like a dark veil hanging over your life. Everything seems heavier, slower, and bleaker. Small things suddenly take a lot of energy, joy seems far away, and you find it hard to motivate yourself to get up or connect with others.

Depression isn't your fault. It's not a sign that something is "wrong" with you. It's your body and mind's reaction to prolonged stress, grief, loss, setbacks, or challenges you couldn't adequately address. Sometimes depression is a shutdown of a system that has been overloaded for too long, your body's way of protecting you when it no longer has the energy to fight continuously. Therapy can help you reconnect with yourself, your life energy, and experience space again, even in the moments that feel difficult.

What depression actually is

Depression is more than just sadness or gloom. It's a state in which your system becomes stuck in patterns of negative thoughts, feelings of hopelessness, and low energy.
Depression often does not arise from a single event, but from an accumulation of experiences or a prolonged period of stress:

  • loss of a loved one

  • chronic stress or burnout

  • recurring negative thoughts or self-criticism

  • long-term overload or ignoring your own needs

Depression is like a stop sign, a signal that suppresses everything to conserve your energy. This reaction was intended to protect you, but in the long run, it actually prevents you from living the life you want. This often means you've ignored yourself, your desires, and your needs, which can lead to feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and hopelessness.

How depression manifests itself

Depression can manifest itself in many ways:

  • little energy or motivation

  • depressed mood that lasts for a long time

  • little pleasure or interest in things you used to enjoy

  • difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • withdrawal from social contacts

  • physical complaints such as pain, sleep problems or fatigue

It can feel like everything is going wrong and you're stuck in a downward spiral. That's not surprising. It's your system's way of signaling that it's overloaded and needs help.

Why therapy for depression helps

It's about being present with what's going on inside you and making space for difficult feelings, as well as getting in touch with deeper needs.

Together we investigate:

  • what your system is trying to convey

  • which emotions, thoughts and physical sensations are stuck

  • old experiences that still linger

  • patterns in your behavior and relationships

  • how to reconnect with your own values, desires and needs

  • where you can take small steps to regain your energy and zest for life

By creating safety and mindfulness, your system learns to relax again and you can reconnect with the here and now. Depression doesn't always disappear completely, but you learn to live from within yourself again, instead of from hopelessness or overload.

The goal of therapy for depression

The goal of therapy isn't to make you never feel sad again: everyone experiences sadness or fatigue at times. The goal is to free your depression from its control and reconnect with yourself.

Therapy helps ensure that you:

  • reconnect with yourself and your environment

  • notice again what you find important and what gives you energy

  • deal better with your emotions

  • take small steps towards things that give satisfaction and pleasure

  • regain your life energy and vitality

You don't have to do this alone, and you don't need to know how it all works right away. The process is step by step, with safety and support.
